President Mohammad Khatami here on Saturday said there was a need for an all-out struggle, against global terrorism .

his remarks were part of an address delivered before thousands of armed forces and various other groups gathered at the mausoleum

of the Founder of the Islamic Republic, the late Imam Khomeini, to mark the official start of annual celebrations in the country

he stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran has been a major victim of terrorism over the past years.

The war against terrorism calls for global cooperation.

the Iranian president said, adding that the Iranian nation has always been interested in maintaining peace and tranquility in all parts

of the world .

Briefing his audience on the achievements of the 1980-88 Iraqi-imposed war, the president said that although the eight-year war

inflicted great damage on the country it also brought several blessings to the Iranian nation.

Elsewhere in his speech, President Khatami called on the members of the armed forces to be on full alert in order to confront any

kind of threat against the Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation.

Today the policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is based on detente and furtherance of relations with world nations and states on the

basis of mutual respect.

Such policies adopted by the Islamic Republic of Iran does not mean that we are unaware of numerous threats being launched

against the Islamic Revolution, the Iranian nation and the territorial integrity of the country.

he stressed.

Iran's geo-political and geo-strategic situation calls for the armed forces to be always vigilant against all existing threats.

Praising the great efforts of the Iranian armed forces, particularly those of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) during the

eight-year war against Iraq, the president said that the armed forces are the backbone of power, peace, tranquility and progress for

the country.
